These organisations require special promotional activities.  Selling items, such as educational supplies, as part of a non profit fundraising effort is but one method of advertising charitable organisations. There are many ways to market non profit organisations.

  • Hire a famous or prominent spokesperson
  • Promote a special event
  • Maintain an active database
  • Network with similar organisations

Develop a recognizable brand name

A non profit organisation needs a brand that is memorable. Developing it takes a great deal of creativity and skill. The name should distinguish the organisation from others in the non profit sector. Ideally it should include the name of the cause, or aim of the organisation as part of the brand.
Another effective branding method is to have a memorable logo. The logo may include a cute creature or symbol which represents the cause. The symbol can be marketed in various promotional items to increase visibility.

Hire a prominent spokesperson

Often a non profit organisation hires a spokesperson to advertise their activities. This person is often a famous actor, model or sports person. They should be eloquent and project an image that is easily relatable.
Sometimes a charity hires an ordinary person to be their spokesperson. The person usually has experience with the cause the non profit represents. Hiring a spokesperson is a good marketing strategy because it humanises the organisation and associates the brand with the person’s image.

Promote a special event

Many organisations centre their fundraising on a special event. These are often ribbon events held on a particular day of the year. The event draws interest and attention to the organisation and its aims. They are also very profitable marketing exercises. A well run event, such as a ribbon or picnic day, can raise a great deal of money for a charity. Often it includes sales of associated items such as educational supplies and soft toys which can further advertise the organisation,

Maintain an active database

If special events and other marketing projects are to be successful, it is necessary to have an actively maintained database of contacts and supporters. Maintaining the database may include issuing a quarterly newsletter to ensure that all contacts are current and encouraged to continue their support of the organisation.
