Search engine optimization (SEO) is the method of increasing the traffic you get to your website. The ultimate goal of internet marketers is to get their sites to the top 10 of search engines. People usually only click on the first few sites that appear in search engine results. The higher your page ranking, the greater your chances of drawing traffic to your site. There are two types of SEO: black hat SEO and white hat SEO. The difference between the two lies on how it is done. White hat SEO uses ethical methods. These methods include reciprocal links, writing quality content and internal links. Black hat SEO, on the other hand, uses unethical means of building site traffic. These include link farms, article spinning and keyword stuffing. They may be “easier” to do but in the long run they can cause problems. Here are some reasons why black hat SEO techniques do you more harm than good.

• Quantity over quality. Many black hat SEO methods focus on quantity rather than quality. Take for example article spinning. Marketers “spin” their articles (rewrite them in a different way) in order to evade duplicate content checkers. Some marketers spin one article up to 20 times. The disadvantage here is that quality is sacrificed for quantity. Spinning can also change the original meaning of the text which may make the content confusing to readers.
• Short term fix. Black hat SEO methods are only short term fixes. Your page rank may improve at first. But it can either diminish or remain at a particular page rank for a long time.
• Losing loyalty. One thing that can really drive people to a site is quality. Regularly posting quality content that adds value to people will keep them coming back for more. Your online network is your asset. Your readers are the ones who will help you on your way to achieving passive income. However if you don’t take care of them you will end up losing them. But if people see that you are using unethical methods to build site traffic then that will reflect badly on you and your site is going to be the one that pays the price.
• Your site might get banned. Because of the barrage of black hat SEO methods that internet marketers are using these days, search engines have tightened their policies. Now they will really ban sites that don’t follow their rules. If you don’t want your site to get banned and watch all you hard work go down the drain, then do it right. Use the correct SEO methods.
