A Movie Review of the Film Dune by David Lynch

The film Dune was released in 1984. It was written as well as directed by David Lynch and known as one of the science fiction films of early 80’s. The story of the film was taken from Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name which was written in 1965. Kyle MacLachlan played the role of Paul Atreides who was the hero of the movie. Besides this, Dune is also considered as the best combination of European and American characters in supporting roles. The film was completed at the Churubusco Studios which is considered as the biggest production house of Mexico City and the sound track of Dune was developed by the famous band of that time that was known as Toto. The film basically circulates around a titular desert planet which was in the custody of malevolent House Harkonnen. A young man Kwisatz Haderach frees this plant with the help of a native guy called Fremen.

The novel from where the idea of this film was taken got so much popularity that David Lynch decided to give it a dramatic shape and soon in early 1971, he created Dune which was reflecting the concept and characters of that novel. It was a very lengthy process and the authors P Jacobs, Alejandro, Jodorowsky and Ridley Scott were tired in bringing the whole concept and idea of the film to the screen. The film remained successful and just after its release the executive producer Dino De Laurentiis hired David Lynch as a director for his new film.

The film got popularity in almost all parts of the world but could not perform well at the American box office. After the release Lynch was so much pressurized by the financers and producers of the movie who restrained his artistic control. Finally, he decided to launch three different versions of Dune worldwide.

The film basically explores the world of future where the universe will be going to ruled by Padishah Emperor known as Shaddam Comino. His empire has a most precious substance which is called mélange. It is a substance which was discovered to extend the life of human being. Not only it is used to expand human consciousness but is also used for space travelling purposes. This spice was used by the Spacing Guild and its navigators to fold the space and was used to provide guidelines to the interstellar ships to different parts of the universe. Due to the popularity and benefits of the spice, Guild sends a message to the emperor and created a plan to destroy House Atreides. At that time the popularity of a secret army grown who was called Duke Leto Atreides who used some sonic weapons as a threatening tool for the Emperor. The navigators suggested the emperor to kill the son of Duke. In the meanwhile, Baron Vladimir Harkomen orders his nephews Glossu Rabban and Feyd-Rautha by taking the help from someone into betraying Duke and planned to eliminate the Atreides. The overall film is thrilling and exciting for fantasy lovers and admired by children and family as well.
